Anabaena spiroides

caption Anabaena spiroides (Cyanobacteria, Nostocales). A filamentous, N-fixing cyanobacterium. Two heterocytes (cells in which N fixation takes place) are seen in this coiled chain as clear, lighter-colored cells, whereas the vegetative cells are darker with more texture, partly due to presence of aerotopes (gas vesicles). This species is rarely found in Lake Kinneret, more often in the littoral.
