Arctic-Lena Delta images

description This image set has been designed for the archival of image material from expeditions to the Lena delta in the Russian Arctic. It will therefore contain material for both freshwater and marine species. The image material will be provided by expedition participants from the Alfred Wegener institute and its Russian partners and will form a comprehensive archive of plankton biodiversity in the Lena delta and parts of the Laptev Sea. Samples will be collected on annual cruises on a freshwater to marine gradient, thereby providing the first true long-term data for the area. Many taxa are still being identified to species level with a small team of international experts and the Lena Delta species list is therefore going to increase successively. However, as there are as yet very few records of Lena Delta phytoplankton, the primary goal of the collection is to provide pictorial metadata accompanying count data from fixed phytoplankton samples. This will avoid problems of misidentification and lack of comparability between ours and future data sets.
